What makes Thonet chairs so special and timeless?
The answer to this question has already been sought by many designers, professionals and furniture fanatics like us. This is not only in one aspect, as one might expect, but in a whole series of them. Even with the invention of the unique process for the production of the so-called bentwood furniture, the foundation stone of modern furniture history was laid. In 1830 master carpenter Michael Thonet used this process for the first time, bending solid wood with steam. So a bit later, the legendary coffee house chair was born, which we have all often seen in vintage cafes, with grandma, in many museums or with friends and acquaintances. Ironically, this chair has paved the way for all other Thonet chairs. Since 1889, the company and production headquarters of the family business Thonet has been located in Frankenberg, where the museum of the same name is located.
Today Thonet’s showrooms are also found in many major cities around the world such as Vienna, Amsterdam, London, Dusseldorf and Dubai. Renowned international designers have been working for Thonet for years, creating new and newly interpreted pieces of furniture that bear the proud furniture brand. It is not for nothing that some Thonet chairs and other furniture creations by the company have won the most important design awards – such as the German Design Award and the Interior Innovation Award.

Thonet chairs and furniture creations at IMM Cologne 2017
Of course, Thonet furniture was also on display at IMM Cologne Messe this year. The “massive lightness” and optimal functionality in addition to the perfection in the design and the attention to detail have once again made the hearts of all professionals and design lovers beat faster. Holistic furnishing concepts in the Bauhaus style with high seating comfort and minimalist touch – a lot of solid wood in light shades, noble leather in muted shades and high quality fabrics with a soft feel have set the tone for the new season.
Here were of course the well-tried and widely popular cantilever chairs. Designed for the first time in the 1930s by Marcel Breuer for Thonet, the steel-tube chairs quickly began their triumphal procession around the world. The classics are the S 32 without and S 64 with armrests, which are a successful combination of tubular steel, wood and wicker or can be covered with leather and fabric.
